Marriage

Pope Francis, in his 2021 letter to married couples, says that “marriage, as a vocation, calls you to steer a tiny boat – wave-tossed yet sturdy, thanks to the reality of the sacrament – across a sometimes stormy sea”. As Catholics, we believe that the Sacramentality of Marriage strengthens couples to flourish in their relationship, and weather the various storms that life may throw their way.

Through marriage, Catholics also believe that God’s love is revealed, communicating to the world, through the witness of the couple, the presence of Christ. The couple establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, which by its nature is ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring. This covenant between baptised persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament, making visible God’s grace (CCC).

As a Catholic community, we want to support couples through their journey of marriage, whether they are newly engaged and contemplating being married in the Church, or have been married for many years. Our parish offers courses to strengthen couples at various stages of their relationship.

The Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral is a popular location for couples to choose for their ceremony, and our priests are available to help couples plan for and prepare not only for their wedding day but for their married life.

If you want to find out more about how we can support you in married life, or discuss your plans to be married in the Catholic Church please use the contact page on the website to get in touch with our Parish Office and someone will be in contact to help with your query.
