First Eucharist (Holy Communion)
Menu
Catholics believe that during mass, Jesus becomes truly present in the Eucharist – the sacrificial bread and wine – which becomes the Body and Blood of Christ. While this might be challenging, for Catholics it means that the celebration of Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life”. In that moment, the reality of Christ becomes present, a personal encounter which grows our relationship with Him.
It is important, therefore, for Catholics to be prepared to accept this practice, which culminates in the sacrament of First Eucharist or Holy Communion. The Eucharist has deep connections with the Jewish celebration of the Passover. Jesus uses the Passover to institute the Eucharist to fulfill what he has promised in the Economy of Salvation – that through his sacrifice, we are forgiven.
As part of the Catholic curriculum, each of our Catholic primary schools in the area offer Catholic students a preparation program for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. Priests can also assist children from non-Catholic schools to prepare for this sacrament. For adults, completing Holy Communion is done through our RCIA (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program.
