Altar Service
Menu
An altar server is a lay assistant to a member of the clergy during the liturgy. An altar server attends to supporting tasks at the altar such as fetching and carrying, acting as candle bearers and cross bearers, holding Missal, Thurible (Incensing), and ringing the altar bell, among other things. If young, the server is commonly called an altar boy or altar girl. Altar Servers should be baptized Catholics, who have received their first Holy Communion. The minimum age is Year 4 at school, male or female.
Altar Servers should be individuals who strive to be dedicated and committed. Being an altar server may give the server a chance to explore the possibility of exploring his or her religious vocation. Being an altar server in their youth may encourage them to seek out roles in the Mass in their future by doing things like being a reader or an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. St John Berchmans, SJ, was a Jesuit scholastic and is a saint in the Catholic Church. He is the Patron saint of altar servers.
